Whammy, Tremolo or Vibrato Bars & Gee-tars

Youngest son got his ee-lek-trik gee-tar today. He went to bed grinning like a cheshire cat last night, attempting to knock himself out so he could go to sleep faster. He woke up this morning a full on 11 years old, same grin on his face.

Well we'd tried to convince him the huge box was just a giant carrot but to no avail. Im surprised he didnt tread on it with all his excited jumping up and down. In no time we'd got all the bits out and plugged it in and he had his first strum....then he sat there not able to think of what to play.

After a little while we sussed it was slightly out of tune and using the provided electronic tuner we sorted that, then I tried to screw in the "whammy bar". Its the arm that hangs down that you see Slash or Axel Rose, etc using when they do the weooowwweeeooww sounds as they mangle it up and down.

This is where I need some help.

The arm has a thread on it about 1/2 and inch long. After about 4 turns it becomes very slightly tight, and turning it another 3 or 4 or so turns tightens it some more until its close to stopping. Now Ive seen these before in videos and they flop down loose, but if I slacken it off so its floppy then surely it wont make contact with whatever its supposed to press inside! I thought maybe I should tighten it right up and at a certain point it should become loose but I dont want to overdo it and strip the thread or break it.

You need it to be somewhat tight. You want to be able to turn it somewhat, so you can get it up over the strings if needed (allows you to strum them still), but not so slack that the damn thing'll topple out.

You'll also want to be able to push it away from the strings for when you don't need it, as it'll just be in the way of things really normally.

Don't screw it up so tight it won't budge anymore and don't leave it widdling like a wussy where it'll fall off the second yer lad sneezes. Other than that, it's mostly personal preference.
