Last night I was mulling over what to do while sitting staring at my PC desktop. I've downloaded Aion and am like an adolscent kid whose just found another use for his willy, but his hands are firmly tied behind his back. I cant wait until 8pm tomorrow night when the beta servers come live...ALIVEEEE I tell you.
So anyway I didnt really want to play EvE for some reason, I've not got Guild Wars installed any longer or I might have jumped into that, and I dont want to restart any old AoC, WAR, WoW accounts for just a few days of playing. I scanned my shelf and was tempted to give UT3 a soiree - its still installed, but then my eyes fell on COD2....then CODWaW....then COD4 (yeah I know theyre out of sequence). "Hmmm" I thought, then reached for the box, not expecting to find a disk inside but the COD4 Gods were smiling and I slipped it into the drive. Straight away up came the splash screen....ahhhh me beauty!!
But all was not well. Somehow it didnt find my saved profile. Maybe Ive deleted it accidentally, but the rush was upon me and I couldnt be bothered to look for it, so I clicked "multiplayer game". No noob servers for me, I want hardcore (well tbh I looked for a server starting with "noob" but couldnt find one so fuck it), into the action and dead...spawn...run....dead. Bloody snipers!! Spawn again, finally managed to find the "hit the deck & clutch my nuts" key. Okay I remember now that hardcore means no sighting reticle unless zoomed in & no indication of ammo. I begin to crawl to the edge of the broken wall a few feet in front of me, determined to get one of the mothersucking scumbags on the other team...and one of the retards stabbs me in the back just as the map ends. Not only have we lost, but I am also last on the scoreboard and have been made to suffer the last moments of every death thanks to the automatic kill-cam. I decide to leave the server and contemplate changing my username.
On the plus side, I joined another server playing 24/7 Crossfire and managed to rack up a few kills, mostly with the heavy machine gun which was always my favourite weapon. I also made it up to Lance Corporal. I honestly think that starting again with the ranks and guns from zero is going to be the most enjoyable way of getting back into this game. I will definitely be playing it again tonight.

I tried CoD4 the other day but it seems that my onboard graphics card isn't good enough to handle it (the regular one fired up to the moon a few months ago). Sooo... I got a bargain bin version of Cod4 for my PS3 and have played it a little over the past week.
My experience?
About the same as your first match, only it lasted for several matches until I got to grips with the controls.
Nice! Yea, something weird always happens with the saved profiles... I have had to start over I think 4 times now. Crash is an awesome map, especially if you can get ontop of one of the buildings at the "low" end of the map. I always use the 3 bulllet spurt Assault Rifle, and hardcore mode really is better at racking up your level.
<3 CoD4
So a couple of questions then:
1. Do either of you have a server you play on? Maybe we can meet? Not sure about UK - US pings though. My nick is Wulfy
2. Does hardcore mode get you points faster than other modes then?
Okay three questions..
3. Didnt they release a new map for COD4 a while ago?
I haven't played much recently, but I play on tactical servers. Not sure which... but I enjoy them a lot more, since it really limits the ability for players to blindly kill you. i.e. they enforce no noobtubes and blind grenades. I can find out the name of the servers tonight, but if you put a search filter on Hardcore: Yes and Friendly Fire: On, you should be able to find a few.
I don't think you get more points for each thing you do.. I.e. you get 10 points for a kill on either hard or easy. Although I'm really not sure. But, on Hardmode you can kill other players much easier (i.e. if you hit somebody once, they die... it doesn't take 20 rounds liek on easy), so its much easier to get kills... meaning more points. You should really look at completing some of the achievements as well... you can get a ton of points for working towards those... Blowing up 5 cars while you are waiting for an enemy can net some good points.
They released a few maps a -long- time ago, not sure if they released anything new since then. Those were Chinatown, Creek, Killhouse, and Broadcast.
1 - I'm on a PS3 so I seriously suspect we can't play together. :-/
2 - Yes, I think so.
3 - Yup. Don't remember if they were free or had a cost, though.
Side note, you can actually play AoC for free until the 22nd.
See here and here.
You can ... what Valas said. If you do that though and want to resubscribe for the free gifts, do so before going off the page. If you don't you can't get the offer back.
