Did not suck.
Though in respect to anyone who doesn't want mild spoilers, I'll put the rest below.
Beautiful. That's the thought that kept reoccurring throughout the movie. Yes, there is a plot, and it's a very very old plot, being basically "Dances with Wolves" only on a different planet with different technologies. However, although every single moment of it was completely and utterly predictable, do you know, that didn't really matter?
To explain: I must have listened to the "Lost Chronicles" guitar solo in "The Xenon Codex" maybe fifty times or more. I know it by heart. I know where each note will come, how long it will last, exactly how it interlaces with the beat. So surely I'd find it the most boring piece of music to ever hear again?
Not so. Becauseeach second is familiar, I anticipate its perfection, my mind yearns for each tone to be exactly as it is, in its place, perfectly falling within the whole until you can lose yourself in it.
That's where Avatar scored. The story is as known as the palm of your own hand, but each part of it is perfectly placed and paced. It all clicks into its slots, exactly as it should, and it doesn't stuff anything up, it doesn't fumble, it avoids the pitfalls it could have jumped into. And because you know the plot, you can concentrate on looking at how beautiful this constructed moving piece of art is. The 3d is only one part of it, though it certainly helps. There is a glorious obsession, from the slight difference in the pace of a waterfall that falls on a lower-gravity world, to the startling weightless opening scene.
It's not utter perfection, but then I've never said that about any film, and I doubt I ever will. Parts of the planet's biology/ecology are highly questionable, and the ending is simplistically hopeful in a way which anyone who has any experience of human nature will automatically doubt. Yet it's the closest I've seen to a complete visualisation of another world. I saw people walking out of the movie with their faces shining, and I have to say, I stepped a little lighter myself. It wasn't the "earth-shattering film that will change cinema forever" it has been hyped as, but it was a few hours of beauty in the world.
I will be going to see it again while it's still out.

Awesome. Unfortunately I am going to see Ninja's Assassin tonight, as the person I am going with wants to wait to see Avatar with his wife. Very glad to hear it lived up to at least some of its hype. I watched a "Making of" on it last night though. The way they generated the facial expressions was outstanding. Along with the normal "Put balls on each joint and map that to CGI" they had a camera mounted directly in front of their face that picked up their eye, mouth, nose, forehead movements which then got mapped into CGI. The main actors were laughing about how difficult the kissing seens were, as basically they had to maneuver the cameras around the other person's face.
Make sure you watch it in 3-d. It's a total waste seeing it any other way. Seeing the trailers for it on TV and on normal movie screens makes it look crap. It might actually have been better if they'd only advertised it on radio or with stills, as the 2d clips are so unlike the 3d version.
Yea, thats what I heard. Unfortunately the closest 3d theatre is in downtown washington dc, so I doubt I can get to that anytime soon. I also heard that they spent 500 million dollars (300 to make, 200 to advertise) making the movie, making it the most expensive film to date.
Ninja's Assassin was downright terrible. The plot sucked. The acting sucked. The combat, however, was absolutely freaking awesome. Apparently the lead character is the Justin Timberlake of the asian world, but his ability to speak english was lacking... which seriously undermined his acting ability (for us english speakers). And a good 10 minutes of the film is him greased up flexing muscles. But damn, the fights were good.
The greasing is for his female fans. :P
As for his lack of English, his only other English language based work was Speed racer, and far as I can tell, that wasn't really a big role either. All of his other work was in S. Korean. So, it's to be expected really.
I went to see Avatar almost on a whim, I don't usually like sci-fi that much (except for Star Wars, possibly because I associate it so much with my childhood). But I found Avatar downright awesome. Favourite movie of the year for me.
What I found great about the 3D version is that it's not a gimmicky "pop-in-your-face" crap. It's subtle, and it sucks you in.
Highly recommended movie. I'll go see it a second time for sure.
Plus, it has Sigourney Weaver in it, who is teh hot, even when she's 12 feet tall and blue.
I love that they put in a brief basketball scene for her. Probably because of this.
