Are those dungeons random?

On Saturday night I tried the Dungeon Finder for the very first time. Oh the joys of having a Heirloomed Paladin tanking. They simply ran through the instance, aggroed everything then dropped consecration while DPS whittled everything down. After two runs our group decided to stick together and simply re-queue for another random. And the first tank did 4 runs for us and he was superlative, picking the quickest runs through. The second one was a bit odd though, preferring to do full clears. This was okay as we were getting good experience and it was a load of fun, but here is my problem ...

There is no way that selection can be random at lower levels. 9 runs in a row of Scarlet Monastary: Graveyard? The instances that should have been available to me at level 32 are:

  • Gnomeregan
  • The Scarlet Monastary: Graveyard
  • The Scarlet Monastary: Library

However, when I flipped off the Random Selection and chose a Specific Instance it gave me options on those that are outside of my bracket as well, including Razorfen Kraul, Scarlet Monastary: Armory and Scarlet Monastary: Library.

Not bitching so much as I'm curious how random this is. 9 times running the same one when there are two available seems a bit peculiar, especially as the custom picker gave me 3 additional options.

I got the Vigorous Handguards of the Bandit and the Tumltous Necklace of the Bandit and some other random stuff. Very nice upgrades as well!

The dungeon finder prefers the instances that are colored yellow for you in the specific instances list. So yes, around level 30 you will be running a lot of SM Graveyard. That said, I have used it from level 15 on and I have done Wailing Caverns five times, with zero Deadmines, although they are in the exact same level bracket. So there might be more going on.

One thing that could influence it is that if someone selects a certain instance from the specific instances, it grabs people from the random queue to fill out the group. So if half the players in the bracket want to run a specific instance, the odds of getting other instances with the random instance are small.

What were the levels of the others in the group? Perhaps if there was a 29 or so in there then, in hopes of getting groups queued up faster, they grabbed the five closest to that level then ran the one that would be "best" for the lowest? It is always much easier to run a "lower" dungeon than having a healer attempt to heal a -5 group through the healer's level appropriate dungeon.
