Is the ability to actually own a shop. First off, read this for a humorous take on the idea. Anyways, I know that some games have it, including (as I understand) the very first "Real" MMO, Ultima. And I also understand that SWG has/had it as well.
I don't know. I mean... I am sure after awhile it would be identical to the AHs of WoW and any other game, but I just like the idea of a trade district where you can set up your shop with items you have collected and have a user browse through your selection.
And no. I don't want to play Second Life.

You had an idea ALMOST like this in Final Fantasy XI (the online one), where you could add items you carried to a vendor-window in your character sheet, and then turn on vendor mode (not the real name, you you get the gist). Other people could then stop by and buy the stuff right out of your backpack, leaving the GIL (GIL = Generally Idiotic Lootname / Money) behind.
If you started moving around your vendor-mode stopped, so it was a great AFK tool to use. Lousy way to earn money though, but with only being able to post 7 auctions at a time you had to if you wanted to get rich.
I could see this working in the days when the MMO playerbase was small and love the concept. But now? With however many players? It would be an interesting challenge to manage the frontage aspect of it.
Ragnarok Online had this. If you leveled a Blacksmith or Alchemist, you actually had a cart that you wheeled around behind you. There were some Merchant class (BS and Alchemists) specific skills that would actually allow you to use your cart in battle. Pretty cool. :D
Anyway, you could put stuff in your cart and then vendor it in a shop in the major cities.
Also, TERA Online is planning on having a similar thing. You hatch and level a homunculus that sets up shop for you. I don't know much about it, but it sounds cool.
Any Korean MMO has this. RO, ROSE or the new Battle of the Immortals. It's really nothing special.
AION has this - when you are AFK, you can just set up yr shop, set yr prices people can buy from you, no interaction from you required.
It's a little less functional on Aion because of the auto-disconnect after you've been AFK for so long. Of course...bots fix this...but you didn't hear that from me. :P
It definitely seems to be a Korean MMO thing... Tera, RO, Aion, Rose, all Korean. Hah!
Edit: I just tried to imagine it being incorporated into WoW. Dalaran and Org and (popular alliance city) would lag like hell! Imagine all those shops! >_<;;
When I played RO, the player base was pretty big (don't know HOW big), and the main city, Prontera, was just plastered with shops from the south gate up to the middle of the city. Did lag a bit, so I can't imagine how that would transfer over to a 3D graphics-intensive game.
