Sim City 2013

Awhile back I posted a bunch of videos showcasing the upcoming SimCity release. I will freely admit, I was completely and utterly stoked. So stoked, in fact, that I reinstalled SimCity 4 and played it for a couple of weeks.

The developers just did an AMA (Ask me Anything) over on reddit. I just read it. Or at least most of it, as it is over 3600 comments.

And now I don't want it at all. Just read the top few posts. The top post asks about the need to have an always on connection. The answer? Yes.

Then asks what happens if you bounce your connection. The answer? It shouldn't hurt the game, but they can't give that answer for certain.

Then the second most upvoted question isn't even a question. It's a lengthy list of probably a mere percentage of the posts of outrage that the game is REQUIRED to be always online.

FFS, its a SimCity game. Why does it need to be always on.

No seriously, read that thread. Or some of it. Valid questions are sidestepped left and right, partially answered, or simply show how bad EA has gotten at making games.

There aren't even going to be subways in the game. In fact, there won't be anything underground. The 'city' sizes are the 'medium' size of the previous game. And why? Hardware constraints. Every god damned thing is hardware constraints. 'Oh yea, we couldn't do that because it would be too taxing on our systems'.

Seriously, this is ridiculously stupid. If any developers want to make a killing right now, make a SimCity clone and release it.

My mind keeps coming back to this. You know what would be awesome? A SimCity that started at the birth of man. Start out as hunter/gatherers. After a surplus of food, you can finally settle down for a year or two and start farming. Fast forward to a full fledged tribal civilization with farms and small intertribal trade. Grow that into an ancient civilization. Branch out to explore the world more (yes, this would be the 'social networking' aspect) and begin trade routes. Develop into a 'Rome'-esque setting. Transition into a feudal age where a major city is built with lots of farms nearby to feed the city. Industrial age. Ugh. WTB game developer.

This sounds suspiciously like what Spore tried to do (and failed miserably at).
