World of Warcraft

Tan, this one is especially for you.
What do you think is databased for a game like WoW and/or Civilization?
How do you mean, Stigg?
I... honestly don't know. I guess just a generic, 'what is the purpose of a database in game design'? Do you think that weapons are in a database? The actual characters? I'm not familiar with databasing other than just dumping values in it for easy lookups later.
I'd expect the answer to that is yes, in some form. Might not be a SQL compliant database, but every game will have data that needs to be stored and retrieved. The data to render the game world itself needs to be stored somewhere. Information about the units, their attributes and abilities needs to be stored somewhere. All the little bits of information that puts it all together needs to be somewhere. That information store will need to be accessible, etc. and in some instances updateable.
So yeah, I reckon it is in there in some form. CCP publishes their core database (Of stars, planets, items, etc.) so you could have a poke around that if you're curious.
Do you have something specific in mind?
Well, yes and no. My complete lack of experience in this is showing through. I'll make a post soon.
